You know, I find this bit adorable. That we have such a clear idea of things they have in common. That we can see they can enjoy their time together. That they have several topics they can talk about. Not only glee club or whatever issue of the day is going on, but politics, plays, movies, tv shows and so forth. Because so many times I watch couples on tv shouting at each other all the time about how much they love each other and then nothing is said or shown after that. And I just wonder if these people even like each other in the quiet non-dramatic times. Because it’s in those times where you usually figure out if you have something that will last you more than a series of fireworks and then an empty sky.
This. This. This.
And this is what reminds me most of me and my partner, that I don’t see represented in a lot of media. So many couples are dramatic and fighting and crying all the time, and everything is a BIG DEAL, but you have no idea what they really have in common or what they really enjoy. These small little details say more to me than the big stuff does.

Young, Privileged, and Applying for Food Stamps | The Billfold (via meganwest)
The recession has forced a lot of folks who thought they’d never be one of “those people” to go on government assistance. It’s made many people a lot more humble. But most of us don’t talk about it, because it’s a little embarrassing to admit that, despite having a college education and coming from a “nice” neighborhood and doing everything “right,” sometimes you still end up jobless and penniless.
A good friend of mine was on food stamps after we graduated from college because her 60+ hour/week job paid less than $11,000 per year. She was teaching and mentoring inner-city students. My sister went on food stamps after graduating from one of the Seven Sisters. She was waiting tables and studying for the MCATS. When I was unemployed in the latter half of 2010, I took my unemployment and went on a state program that gave me a discount on my gas bill.
So, yeah. This stuff is real and it happens. Conservatives love to push the idea that only lazy people don’t work, only bums get government assistance, that these programs only benefit people who don’t want to work. The truth is, these programs are feeding a lot of recent college graduates who are still suffering from the recession.

Ms. Marvel vol. 1 #24—
“Some women prefer being protected. Some don’t. Some men prefer to be the protector. Some don’t. You have no more right to impose a role on me than I have to impose one on you.”

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW
SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW
SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW
The closest thing in Sherlock to queer representation was Irene Alder who said she was gay and then fell in love with Sherlock. (make of that what you will.)
The whole show is about two heterosexual men. And one of those men, Watson, spends about half an hour each episode telling everyone ever that he and Sherlock are not a couple.
That is not gay representation.
I repeat: that is not gay representation.
And fuck you if you think that is representation.
A show having a large slash fandom does not count as representation.
I’m sure there a many legitimate criticisms of Elementary, but accusing the show of being homophobic because Watson is played a women is not one of them.
I cannot say this enough times: Sherlock is not a gay positive show.
Sherlock is not a progressive show in terms of representation. It is about two white cis heterosexual men solving crimes.
The fact that Elementary has a women of color as a main character pretty much already makes it more progressive than Sherlock.
And furthermore if you watch Elementary you are under no obligation to ship Sherlock/Watson. I’m sure that there will be at least one other dude you can find.
And listen, Sherlock is a good show and Elementary existing is not gonna change that. You are under no obligation to watch it. You are under no obligation to even acknowledge it.
THANK YOU.

The big UK Kapow Comic show is being held this weekend. The show has been called out for the paucity of female creators and is pretty much a sausage fest (or is bangers fest because it is the UK?).
Joe Quesada of Marvel was there, however, and Ain’t it Cool News was as well. And here’s…
Okay, Quesada. First, you have to destroy MJ and Peter. Second, you say that a) a female actress can’t carry a Marvel movie and b) no female character is cool enough to carry her own film?
The problem isn’t them, it’s you.
Your misogyny is showing. I can’t wait until you step down.
The person i reblogged this from pissed me off with the tags, “superhero boyfriends”… I get it, you like slashing up Tony and Steve, TRUST ME, I DO TOO… But just stop doing it with everything, you’re taking the avengers and making it gay, and you’ll have to kill me to do that.
THE AVENGERS ARE SUPER FUCKING HEROES, NOT GAY MEN.
IF I CAN’T SAVE THE MASCULINITY ON THE AVENGERS, YOU CAN BE DAMN SURE I’LL AVENGE IT.
I have to disagree with this because I am PRETTY SURE that the Civil War arc is about their big gay divorce.
Right?
…Wasn’t it?
Also, superheroes can’t be gay? And being gay makes you less masculine?
… Not a great move, there.
I understand frustration at excessive slash (ugh) and the fetishization of gay men especially at the expense of women (ugh) and the idea that men are incapable of forming close bonds or loving one another without it being sexually motivated (SIGH), but the implication that it’s just not possible because they’re masculine superheroes?
Hulkling and Wiccan of the Young Avengers beg to differ.
Sit down.

Hey, seeing as we are currently all very much into Marvel (comic and/or movie) I remembered a rec I read and very much liked a while ago and figured I’d rec it to you. A fic about a pairing that, unless you have already read this story, you’ve probably never even thought…
AHHHH! YOU GUYS. This is my wife’s fanfic from years ago, and we’re SO STUNNED to see it still being recommended. :D
Here’s an update: the project is no longer being worked on (sorry :( ) BUT she is working on a novel about the second generation of superheroes (two of them based on Spidey and Daredevil) with plenty of LGBT themes. You can follow her updates at jorankins.blogspot.com or follow her on tumblr at jerkass-has-a-point.tumblr.com.
Give her some love! This is her first novel, and knowing that her Spidey/DD fanfic is still being recommended is hugely encouraging.
